Martin Whiteside lives in Thrupp, and is married with three children who have all been to local schools. He is an international development consultant and works for organisations such as Oxfam and the UN advising them on their programmes in Africa and Asia. He is a Stroud district councillor and has also been a parish councillor. He is involved in many local initiatives, including making our roads safer (successfully campaigning for a 20mph limit outside Thrupp School), protecting our green fields from badly planned development and finding better alternatives to a mass incinerator. Whiteside is also an active opponent of the vast new nuclear power station at Oldbury, just a few miles upwind of Stroud.
