Bury South

Bury South is a diverse constituency which takes in the three individual townships of Prestwich, Whitefield and Radcliffe. All are run by Conservative controlled Bury Council, though Liberal Democrats have a strong base in Prestwich.
Labour MP Ivan Lewis has a comfortable majority but his seat is now at risk. Bury Green Party was formed in August 2009 and is standing a Parliamentary candidate for the first time.

George Heron

George Heron is 63 and was brought up in Prestwich. He spent most of the 1970s teaching in Africa but returned here in 1980. His one granddaughter attends a Bury primary school. He has been a Green Party member since 1990. He was active in Bury's Environment Forum in the 1990s and led the formation of Bury Green Party in August 2009, which he now chairs. In recent years he has done extensive work supporting African refugees. This year he has been active in promoting allotments and community gardens and initiating a campaign to improve Bury's programme on climate change.
